Cold temperatures change more than your wardrobe; they change how you carry. Mission94 Instructors share practical ways to adapt your setup for safety and comfort.

Winter weather can make concealment easier and trickier at the same time. Multiple clothing layers and extra bulk help with visual concealment – but make access harder. You can stay warm and safe with these easy and practical tips on concealed carry while wearing layers in the winter.

Start with a Sturdy Holster: A holster is key to safe carry at all times and during all seasons. It’s important to have a reliable holster that holds a firearm securely and minimizes unexpected movement. It’s also vital to have a holster that fully covers the trigger. If your holster is belt-attached, your belt should be sturdy and rated for carry use. Mission94’s expert staff at our on-site Retail Center can help you select a safe holster for your specific needs.

Understand Carry Positions: All carry positions can be affected by winter clothing, so you may need to have an alternate carry method or location planned. Think about what you are wearing and how that will affect access and draw speed. Practice drawing with gloves and layers to adapt to bulkier clothing and reduced dexterity from the cold, ensuring you can draw smoothly and quickly without hindrance, perhaps unzipping coats or suiting CCW jackets with each access.

Learn from the Experts: A concealed carry class is a great way to learn important basics on safe concealment. Mission94 offers Concealed Carry Fundamentals classes on a regular basis, taught by patient, welcoming, and experienced instructors. This comprehensive classroom-style course is designed to be an introduction for beginners or a thorough review for people who want a refresher on the practicalities of concealment. Follow all Safety Protocols: Safety is of paramount importance at Mission94 Firearms Education Center. Follow all state and local laws regarding concealed carry. Regardless of the season, always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction, treat all firearms as though they are loaded, keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot, and securely store your firearm when not carrying. For extra safety in cold weather, practice layering up with your holster so you can test your access, comfort, and draw. A “test run” with the exact clothing you intend to wear and the specific placement and carry position you plan to use can help you stay extra safe.
